The Women's Weekly Castle Cake - a 2025 edition

  • by Alice Bennett

The Women's Weekly Birthday Cake book has a chokehold on this nation. And for good reason. It embodies everything that a kids birthday party should be about. Cakes that aren't precisely perfect, but are made with love and are bound to put a smile on the face of any eager kiddly wink!

It always a fun time when you get to try your hand at one of the cakes. Putting your own spin on the cake is where you can let your creativity shine and make the design uniquely yours.

I've got some tips that will help you recreate one of the best designs in the book - the Castle. Here are a few ways that you can make it your own, have some fun with it and bring it into 2025. Remember it doesn't have to be perfect - that's what makes it feel like one of the Women's Weekly designs.

COLOUR: I think one of the things lacking from the original castle design is colour. There are so many great food dyes now and I think colouring your icing is a great way to bring some flair to the cake.

SHAPE: Your castle could be any shape you like. You might like to add a bridge or some additional turrets. If you're feeding a lot of people, adding to the original shape is a good way to bump serving size.

BISCUITS & LOLLIES ARE YOUR FRIENDS: I think to truly pay homage to the Women's Weekly Birthday Cake book, opt for biscuits and lollies to decorate your cake over fondant features. Plus any leftovers can be served at your party! And biscuits taste superior to fondant.

MOAT: Try piping a moat on the board of your castle. This helps to extend the castle's shape and adds an additional element that will wow your family and friends! If you can get your hands on a gummy crocodile, I would absolutely add that!

CONES: In the book, the original creators simply cover the cones with icing. In my version, I paint white chocolate onto the cones and cover in hundreds & thousands. Again, another great way to bring some colour to the cake. If you also gently cut off the very tip, you can then add some candles when you're finished. The cones are the perfect position for candles!

Can't be bothered making your own cake? Fair enough. You can of course shop our range of cakes online or of course ask Miss Trix to make your own castle for you!
