Why you should do a cake workshop!
Attending a workshop can be incredibly helpful in finessing your cake decorating skills - whether it be your first time decorating a cake or you love having a crack at home - coming along to one of my workshops can be very beneficial. Not to mention delicious, a great opportunity to meet new people and try something new.
Recently I had the lovely Jade (Jade also runs the incredible Instagram account @driverinaus) come along and attend one of my cake decorating workshops. I sat down and asked her what she thought of it all and why it benefited her in her cake decorating journey. If I can't convince you to come along to a workshop, then let Jade (who has actually come along to one!) convince you.
That's Jade! Decorating her very own vintage style cake!! At our workshop no less!
How long have you been decorating cakes / cupcakes / cookies for? Tell us about your cake decorating and baking journey!
It started in Covid, I was stood down from my job and was desperate to kill time during the day. After researching a few different options, I landed on baking after seeing some incredible cake and cookie bakers in Australia on Instagram. I started with sugar fondant cookies and cupcakes at first and learned it all from youtube and instagram tutorials. At first it was a series of different baked goods for my friends and family before doing paid jobs here and there for close friends and family occasions.
What was the biggest takeaway from the class?
It's all in the patience of taking your time and learning to work with the tips. I always struggled to decorate cakes but found thanks to Alice, it didn't have to be overly complicated for it to look like a beautiful cake. A series of different techniques and tricks make all the difference.
What did you enjoy the most?
The group setting was nice, it felt like I wasn't alone and I could also learn from how others adapted Alice's teachings. It was a warm and friendly space that encouraged group conversations, celebrated the wins and opportunities of our decorating experience.
Did you pick up some helpful tips and tricks? If so, what were they?
Yes, as mentioned cakes were almost my enemy, I could never master the crumb coat, or the delicate buttercream designs. I was able to practise in a helpful and encouraging environment which allowed me to go at my own pace, set my own rules on design and work to improve my skills. It was good to understand the buttercream consistency, how the tips work and when to use them for different designs. It increased my confidence so much when it comes to cake decorating.
Why do you think it's of benefit doing a class in person as opposed to online?
I relied on Alice a lot when I got stuck. Completing a class online means I sacrifice the ability to understand how I could be holding the piping bag wrong, how my technique might not be quite right etc. I think the whole experience is made special with that in person interaction, the atmosphere of the other people in the class and the ability to take the cake away when we are done as a sense of award/prize of our time from the class.
Convinced? I thought you might be. Information for our next workshop is here. See you there!
